Jocelyn R. Smith, LGMFT

Jocelyn Smith, a Licensed Graduate Marriage and Family Therapist, joined Jonah Green and Associates in the spring of 2011. Ms. Smith has provided couple, family, and individual therapy in private practice in Largo, MD and at the Center for Healthy Families in College Park, MD. In both settings, she has treated a diverse population of children, adolescents, and adults and has expertise in working with a variety of presenting problems.

Across client configurations (couple, family, or individual), she has particular skill in treating internalizing (i.e. anxiety & depression) and externalizing behaviors (i.e. acting-out); skill development (i.e. communication, problem-solving, anger & stress management skills); and strengthening relationships. She supervises therapists-in-training and holds a certificate in play therapy.

Ms. Smith is a Doctoral Candidate and Graduate Instructor in Family Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. She anticipates obtaining her PhD in 2012.

Approach to Therapy

Ms. Smith believes that couple, family, and individual therapy can help equip clients with skills and resources to build better lives, better relationships, and stronger families. This is accomplished by offering a trusting and hopeful environment in which to discuss concerns in confidence and without judgment. Ms. Smith provides a safe environment in which clients can: 1) garner strength, 2) gain insight about themselves and their relationships, 3) develop solutions to life stressors & problems, and 4) become empowered to create healthy changes. She is trained in a variety of models of therapy including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Experiential Therapy, and Client-Focused play therapy, and uses an eclectic approach to best meet client needs. Her goal is to work collaboratively with clients to achieve their goals.

Ms. Smith respects & values the thoughts, feelings, experiences, & cultures of all clients. She has received specialized training in cultural competency and has skill & experience in working successfully with a diverse group of clients.

Areas of Interest

Ms. Smith effectively works with children, teens, adults, couples, and families to resolve a variety of presenting concerns including but not limited to: life transitions (i.e. divorce, separation, unemployment), anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief/loss, behavioral deficits & problems, school/work performance issues, stress management, anger management, conflict & problem solving, parent-child relationship dynamics, and couple relationship issues.

Education

Ms. Smith received a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland, a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Hampton University, and anticipates a PhD in Family Science from the University of Maryland in 2012. Ms. Smith is also certified in play therapy.
