Annie C. Scheiner, LCMFT

Annie Scheiner, a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist, joined Jonah Green and Associates in 2008. She works with individual, couples, and families. Ms. Scheiner has provided therapy at the University of Maryland Center for Healthy Families, treating children, adolescents and adults, and worked for 15 years with families at the Parent Encouragement Program in Kensington, MD. She works with a variety of populations and presenting problems, and is particularly skilled in treating anxiety, depression, acting-out behaviors, and acting-in behaviors (such as withdrawal, avoidance, or isolation). She supervises therapists-in-training and holds certificates in play therapy and family mediation. She and her husband of 26 years have raised three children.

Approach to Therapy

Ms. Scheiner approaches therapy as a cooperative effort between client and therapist. She does both short-term solution-oriented work and longer in-depth work, as appropriate to the client’s needs and goals. Ms. Scheiner creates a safe, supportive environment with her encouraging, nonjudgmental approach. She helps clients tap into their own inner resources to solve their problems and manage their lives. She supports clients in examining and challenging the assumptions they hold about themselves and the world—assumptions that maybe preventing them from moving forward. She uses experiential therapy to create new, positive experiences during sessions that clients can then take into their lives outside.

In working with children, Ms. Scheiner creates a customized blend of client-centered play therapy and talk therapies such as Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Experiential Therapy. She works with couples on issues such as intimacy, conflict, infidelity, boundaries, and co-parenting. She helps clients to learn to use their family and community systems to support desired change and provides skill-training when needed, in areas such as parenting, anger management, and communication.

Education

Ms. Scheiner received a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland, a Juris Doctor from George Washington University, and a Bachelors of Art from the University of Michigan.
