Shana Simkin, a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist, joined Jonah Green and Associates in 2014. Shana has worked with children, adolescents, families, and individual adults in a variety of settings, including a community-based clinic, a mental health day treatment program for children, and a Montgomery County public middle school. She presently works at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in the Department of Psychiatry. Shana has clinical experience helping families with life transitions, anxiety and depression, separation and divorce, family communication, stress, and loss. She has also conducted early childhood development research at Child Trends, a non-profit research organization in Bethesda, MD. Her areas of research focus include mood and anxiety disorders, relationship challenges, and issues related to emerging adulthood.
Approach to Therapy
Shana’s approach to therapy involves creating a safe and supportive environment for all of her clients. She sees her work as a collaborative effort between client and therapist and she strives to empower her clients in ways to help them navigate and take control of life’s difficulties. Shana sees herself as a guide and an interpreter, helping family members better understand one another in order to increase family cohesion. Shana approaches her clients’ concerns from a strengths-based perspective and helps them consider their challenges within the context of their relationships.
Education
Shana received a Masters in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University.
